Weinstein received the award for “Centering: A Framework for Modeling the Local Coherence of Discourse,” a paper he coauthored. The article, which was published in Computational Linguistics in June 1995, examines relationships among focus of attention, choice of referring expression, and perceived coherence of utterances within a discourse segment

The Queen’s College at University of Oxford recognized Barbara Savage, Geraldine R. Segal Professor of American Social Thought and Professor of Africana Studies, with an undergraduate prize named in her honor. The Barbara Savage Prize will be awarded annually to the student with the best thesis in Black history.

The head of Penn’s Chemistry Library, was elected to the 2020 class of American Chemical Society Fellows for outstanding achievements in and contributions to science. Currano was elected in recognition of her devotion to teaching chemical information and making it accessible to all, her status as an international leader in chemical information, and for her service as a mentor to women in science and as Chair of the ACS Committee on Ethics.

A new initiative hopes to address the disparities in diversity in neuroscience—Black in Neuro. Debuted on Twitter this summer, the initiative was organized by 22 graduate students, postdocs and professionals from universities and institutions around the world to highlight Black excellence in the field.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is funding the work over five years. The award, part of the Biden Cancer Moonshot Initiative, makes Penn one of seven centers across the country working on this effort as part of the NCI’s Implementation Science Centers in Cancer Control.
