Internship program recognized

The Summer Internship Program was awarded the distinguished "Community Service Award" by the Blacks Networking for Progress, Inc. on Thursday, Feb. 26. The award was presented at the Seventh Annual Black History Month Celebration at 100 Penn Square East.

Blacks Networking for Progress, Inc., also known as BNP, Inc., has been acknowledging individuals who have significantly contributed to the African American community for seven years. The theme for this year is African American Excellence and Achievement. The Penn Summer Internship Program was recognized for its "superior commitment and work in the West Philadelphia community."

Fifth award to Sugrue book

Thomas Sugrue received the Bancroft Prize in American History, for his book "The Origins of Urban Crisis: Race and Inequality in Postwar Detroit."

Sugrue, assistant professor of history, is one of the two recipients of this prestigious award given by Columbia University. The Bancroft Prize is the fifth honor for Sugrue's book.

Past awards include Choice magazine's outstanding books for 1997 list, the 1997 Philip Taft Award for Best Book in Labor History, 1997 Urban History Association Award for the Best Book in North American Urban History, and the 1996 President's Book Award from the Social Science History Association.
