University Club seasons dining experience

The University Club is expanding its offerings to give members a more inviting, interesting, and enjoyable dining experience.

The dining facility on the second floor of the Inn at Penn is planning a series of initiatives and events that will begin in May.

On Wednesday, May 1, the Club is offering a “Cocktails and Mocktails” class to members interested in learning techniques for making tasty drinks. Registration for the class is $22 and ends on Friday, April 26.

In the fall, the Club will offer other appealing classes, such as cooking sessions and instruction by a sommelier, or wine steward, who will teach participants how to select wines.

One of the biggest Club changes is the addition of alcoholic beverages for lunch. Beginning Monday, May 6, the Club will begin serving wine by the glass, as well as beer.

The Club is also launching a pilot program in June to offer an à la carte dining option. Instead of the standard buffet service, diners will be able to receive table service by choosing items from a menu, including three specials of the day.

“We believe it enhances the experience for diners,” says Jeff Barta, general manager of Hospitality Services at Penn.

Barta says if table service is popular with diners, it will become a regular service offered at the Club. Come fall, he says the Club will have other new programs, including expanding hours until 5 p.m. for those craving a light afternoon meal.

Penn faculty, staff, graduate students, and alumni—along with emeritus and retired faculty and staff—are eligible to join the University Club.

For a faculty or staff member’s first year of employment, the Club waives the $65 membership fee.

Barta says one of the benefits of joining the University Club is the opportunity to break bread with friends, co-workers, and former classmates.

“It provides an excellent opportunity for impromptu collaboration and reconnecting with peers and colleagues,“ he says.
