Women’s soccer wins weekend to open fall sports season

The Quakers defeated Mount St. Mary’s on Friday and Army West Point on Sunday to start the season 2-0.

Scoring five goals in the second half, the Penn women’s soccer team opened its 2018 season with a decisive 5-0 defeat of Mount St. Mary’s at Rhodes Field on Friday, Aug. 24.

Five Quakers notched at least one point. Senior forward Sasha Stephens put Penn on the board with a goal in the 60th minute. Sophomore forward Paige Howard paced the Quakers with two goals and one assist. Senior midfielder Allie Trzaska, a three-time All-Ivy honoree, had two assists.  

Junior goalie Kitty Qu, a returning First-Team All-Ivy selection, collected her first shutout of the season, and sixth overall, tying her for seventh all-time in program history. 

In three meetings, the Quakers have never lost to Mount St. Mary’s, and have never given up a goal.

On Sunday, Aug. 26, a penalty kick by junior midfielder Emily Sands in the 63rd minute was the difference in Penn’s 1-0 win over Army West Point at Rhodes Field.

Qu had two saves and earned her second consecutive shutout, her seventh overall.

The Quakers dominated shots on goal during their opening weekend, outshooting Mount St. Mary’s 26-4 and Army West Point 12-4.

Next up for Penn is a battle against 16th-ranked North Carolina State on Aug. 31 at 5 p.m. at Rhodes Field.
