  • Promoting gender equality and gender equity at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School

    Despite the growing number of women entering the legal field, America’s law school faculty is still largely male. In recent years, the Law School has worked to reduce faculty gender disparity. As of 2020, 35% of Penn Law’s faculty are women—up from 22% just a few years ago. “The goal is to make it clear to everybody that promoting women’s advancement is an institutional priority and that we’re going to support projects and work on multiple fronts,” says dean and Bernard T. Segal Professor of Law Ted Ruger.

  • 2021 Models of Excellence honors

    Penn’s Division of Human Resources has announced the 2021 honorees in four categories: Models of Excellence, Pillars of Excellence, Model Supervisor, and a special category, Sustaining Penn Through COVID-19. The awards go to staff members who show initiative, leadership, increased efficiency, and a deep commitment to service.

  • Has the pandemic set female leadership back?

    Wharton Dean Erika James joined Wharton professors Janice Bellace, Corrine Low, and Nancy Rothbard on March 22  for a livestreamed faculty discussion titled “Has the Pandemic Set Female Leadership Back?” The panelists said the labor statistics are alarming, and reflect the need for better policies around affordable, accessible child care, as women still bear the brunt of child-rearing despite their decades of advancement in the workplace.

  • Shelley L. Berger and M. Celeste Simon named 2021 Fellows of the AACR Academy

    Genetics researcher Shelley L. Berger and cellular biologist M. Celeste Simon have been named as members of the 2021 class of fellows of the American Association for Cancer Research Academy, which recognizes and honors distinguished scientists whose major contributions have propelled significant innovation and progress against cancer.

  • Growing agricultural biotech startup, 2019 President’s Innovation Prize winners Strella Biotechnology expands to lab space at the new Pennovation Lab

    The Pennovation Lab’s newest tenant, Strella Biotechnology, is expanding its agricultural innovation within the Pennovation Works ecosystem. The Lab is designed for companies that have secured early-stage funding and have outgrown their incubator space. With this new lease, nearly one third of the building is already under agreement.

  • Brenda Casper elected a Fellow of the Ecological Society of America

    The professor of biology and chair of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, has been elected a Fellow of the Ecological Society of America, which recognizes the many ways in which its members contribute to ecological research and discovery, communication, education and pedagogy, and management and policy.

  • Delta Dental Foundation funds professional development series on serving persons with disabilities

    With the goal of helping to improve access to dental care for individuals with disabilities, Penn Dental Medicine will be establishing a new continuing education series through the support of the Delta Dental Foundation. The gift will fund an online professional development program designed to help oral health professionals better understand and care for the disabilities community.

  • How diet may alter risk of periodontal disease

    In a new study in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Penn Dental Medicine researcher find that overall some categories of foods—nuts, red meat, and trans-fatty acids—may be associated with periodontal disease. In specific, nuts may be protective, while red meat and trans-fatty acids might increase your risk for periodontal disease.

  • Update on The Philadelphia Area Environmental Justice Curriculum Hub

    The Environmental Justice Hub will launch in May 2021, with the goal to gather and organize curricular resources for environmental justice education at the secondary school and in higher education. Currently, collaborators are gathering for Working Wednesdays sessions to brainstorm project development.
