In states that expanded Medicaid after the Affordable Care Act, safety-net hospitals (SNHs) saw their operating margins improve and levels of uncompensated care decrease. But a new study finds that while SNHs were also able to scale up some safety-net services—such as inpatient psychiatric care—these changes did not translate into measurable improvements in quality.

A team of Master of City Planning and Master of Landscape Architecture students at Weitzman won an Edmund N. Bacon Urban Design Award from Philadelphia’s Center for Architecture and Design. The team’s proposal reimagines the 1300-acre Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery site located along the Schuylkill River in Southwest Philadelphia.

The Richer & Elizabeth Goodwin Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering was elected for her contributions to understanding nonequilibrium processes at soft matter interfaces and its impact on new technologies. Sixteen teams of first-year graduate architecture students spent the last week and a half in January designing carnival floats for a 52nd Street celebration of Juneteenth, the holiday celebrating the emancipation of American slaves on June 19, 1865. For the remainder of the studio, the students will focus on developing a market for the 52nd Street El station, incorporating the carnival theme.

The assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy was selected for the Outstanding Young Researcher Award (Macronix Prize) by the International Organization of Chinese Physicists and Astronomers. The award is given annually to one to two physicists and/or astronomers of Chinese ethnicity working in North America, Europe, or other regions outside Asia, to encourage and recognize contributions in physics or astronomy.
