  • Green solutions are transforming a West Philadelphia grade school

    With support from grants and the Netter Center, the Andrew Hamilton School in Cobbs Creek is now home to a food forest and a thriving garden, providing healthy produce, green space, stormwater management, and educational opportunities.

    Torrence Rothmiller, principal of Andrew Hamilton School, lent a hand as students and volunteers planted fruit-bearing trees and shrubs around the periphery of the campus. A student-led team from Penn has partnered with Hamilton to enliven the school’s green spaces and offer in- and after-school educational opportunities that put children in touch with nature.

    Research led by Penn Dental’s Henry Daniell shows that antiviral and antibacterial chewing gums reduce the levels of three microbes linked to worse outcomes in oral cancers, paving the way for more effective and affordable therapies.
