Quakers down Brown, earn share of Ivy title

The women’s soccer team clinched a share of the Ivy League championship on Sunday with a defeat of the Brown Bears.

On Sunday, Senior Day, the Penn women’s soccer team clinched a share of the Ivy League title, defeating Brown 2-0 at Rhodes Field. The Red & Blue can win the championship outright on Saturday, Nov. 3, with a win or tie against Princeton.

Senior forward Sasha Stephens scored the first goal of the game in the 52nd minute, assisted by senior midfielder Allie Trzaska.

In the 77th minute, freshman forward Mia Shenk scored the first goal of her career, on an assist by sophomore forward Paige Howard.

Junior goalkeeper Kitty Qu had two saves and increased her school record with her 19th career solo shutout. The Red & Blue have only given up four goals all season.

Trzaska had 3 shots, 3 shots on goal, and 1 assist. Stephens had 2 shots, 1 shot on goal, and 1 goal. Shenk had 1 shot, 1 shot on goal, and 1 goal.

Penn has clinched a share of the Ivy League title for the first time since 2010, and did so by virtue of their 12th shutout of the season. The Quakers beat the Bears for the first time since 2014, and for the first time under Nicole Van Dyke, the Douglas N. Brush Head Coach of Women’s Soccer.

Heading into Saturday’s showdown with Princeton in New Jersey, the Quakers are riding a seven-game winning streak, and a 12-game unbeaten streak. Their 13-1-1 record is the best in school history, and their 5-0-1 conference record is their best ever through six Ivy League games. 

The winner of the regular season finale will earn an automatic trip to the 64-team NCAA Tournament.
