Even though the birthday of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. was officially observed by the federal holiday on Monday, Jan. 16, the University is hosting ongoing events through the end of the month and into February to honor the life, work, and spirit of the civil rights leader. On Thursday, Jan. 19, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in the lounge of Houston Hall, 3417 Spruce St., join in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Interfaith Program and Awards Commemoration. The event includes poetry and musical performances from the Penn community, guest speaker Eboo Patel, founder and president of Interfaith Youth Core, and the presentation of the MLK community awards.

On Friday, Jan. 27, the MLK Symposium Committee and the African-American Resource Center present “Jazz for King,” an annual jazz and poetry event. This event takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Annenberg Public Policy Center, 1st floor, Agora Room, 202 S. 36th St. On Thursday, Feb. 2, from noon to 2 p.m., LIFE UPENN and Brotherhood@UPENN present “Brothers Keep Dreaming … and Fighting: Intergenerational Reflections on the Man King and the Civil Rights Legacy II,” which features clips and a discussion about civil rights and King’s legacy for today’s generation. The event takes place at the LIFE Center, 4508 Chestnut St.
