  • Virtual case managers add detective presence that helps keep older adults out of hospital

    For the last year, Julie Hontz, a virtual case manager for Penn Medicine at Home’s SOAR program, has been helping elderly patients go home from the hospital earlier by assessing patients’ needs and support in the home. Hontz’s role is to make calls with the patients and caretakers detect any issues before they become impediments to healing at home.

  • Weitzman kicks off summer program with The Fresh Air Fund to prepare underserved youth for careers in design

    PennPraxis Design Fellows will lead an interactive virtual course for 150 Fresh Air Fund youth ages 14-17 in July and August 2020. The course, Fresh Air Everywhere: Virtual Design Studio, will be one offering to youth in the Fresh Air program in lieu of the traditional summer camp experience this summer.

  • Rakesh Vohra wins SIGecom Test of Time Award

    The George A. Weiss and Lydia Bravo Weiss University Professor, has won for his paper, “Calibrated Learning and Correlated Equilibrium.” The SIGecom Test of Time Award recognizes research published between ten and twenty-five years ago that has stood the test of time in its field.

  • What happens after COVID-19? Penn Medicine’s new post-COVID recovery clinic offers support

    Shortly after the pandemic reached Philadelphia, Benjamin Abramoff and Franklin Caldera began seeing patients who had recovered from COVID-19 in their acute inpatient rehabilitation unit. Recognizing the demand for a more coordinated, comprehensive approach for these patients, Abramoff and Caldera collaborated with colleagues to spearhead the launch of Penn’s Post-COVID Recovery Clinic.

  • Penn Law’s David Abrams will apply a large data collection to study crime during the pandemic

    A large collection of data from nearly 25 cities on the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on crime in the United States presents an opportunity to “test basic theories of crime.” In general, Abrams found crime has fallen considerably during the pandemic.

    Penn Law’s Dorothy Roberts’ pens a response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in June Medical Services v. Russo, which strikes down an oppressive Louisiana anti-abortion rights law, calling it “a major victory for reproductive justice in America.”

  • Dean Vijay Kumar announces Penn Engineering’s first associate dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

    Camillo Jose Taylor, Raymond S. Markowitz President’s Distinguished Professor, is appointed to the inaugural position at Penn Engineering, to serve as an advisor and advocate, elevating the core values of diversity, equity and inclusion in our community.

  • Shu Yang wins Manufacturing PA Innovation grant for developing snail-inspired adhesive

    Yang was awarded approximately $70,000 to fund an application of her “snail glue” research. This research centers on creating durable  gel-based adhesive that can be applied to open wounds, then harden into a protective film.

    The challenges of reopening schools are not easy, and there will be a need to maintain systematic quality control in the face of prescribed approaches changing rapidly. In The Journal of School Nursing, Catherine C. McDonald of Penn Nursing and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia addresses a number of challenges that will likely need to be met and how school nurses are positioned to keep children healthy, safe, and ready to learn.
