Investigating Homelessness

The Department of English and Kelly Writers House present a conversation between author Jennifer Egan and Dennis Culhane of the School of Social Policy and Practice, who studies homelessness and assisted housing policy. They will discuss how social science research and investigative journalism can combine to consider what storytelling can be done to capture the present situation of homelessness.

Trayvon Martin: Racial Divides, Stress and Oppression

Racial divides, stress and oppression can take a toll on the mental well-being of children. The University of Pennsylvania has an expert who can discuss the impact of such highly publicized cases.

One of the nation’s leading authorities on effective parenting and African-American psychology, Dr. Stevenson can discuss how parents can talk to children about violence and tragedies. He can discuss behavioral indicators that a child might be experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder, youth resiliency and the psychological adjustment of children, adolescents and families, particularly after a horrific event.
