As the CEO of Chester County Hospital, Mike Duncan wondered what could he do to understand the murder of George Floyd and resulting protests, and use those as an opportunity? While wider efforts were getting underway at the hospital and across Penn Medicine through its Action for Cultural Transformation (ACT), Duncan also committed himself to finding out how he could help from people who knew best in the Chester County community. To start, he could listen to the Black community.

Penn President Amy Gutmann has appointed De’Broski R. Herbert, in the Department of Pathobiology at the School of Veterinary Medicine as Presidential Term Associate Professor. Herbert is currently associate professor of immunology, and an active collaborator with faculty at Penn Medicine who concentrate on immunologic mechanisms of disease, as well as with faculty from the Institute for Immunology, the Penn Center for Pulmonary Biology, and the Penn Digestive Diseases Center.

The Institute of Contemporary Art will welcome visionary artist, writer, filmmaker, and activist Linda Goode Bryant’s appointment as the 2021-2022 Katherine Sachs (CW’69) and Keith L. Sachs (W’67) Guest Curator. Goode Bryant’s role will be as Artistic Director of the forthcoming initiative RAW Académie, Session 9: Infrastructure, an innovative collaboration between ICA and Dakar-based RAW Material Company, to be held in spring 2022.

Karikó is part of the scientific team whose innovative research laid the foundation for COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. The prize from The Vilcek Foundation is awarded to immigrants to the United States who change the country and the world or to those who are dedicated advocates of immigrants. Karikó will officially receive the award, which comes with $100,000, in the spring of 2022.
