The senior adjunct professor of Global Leadership at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School was elected in June to the United Nations Committee on the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) for the term 2023-2026. A $5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health will help fund research to study how placenta keep harmful substances away from developing babies while still providing proper nutrition. Research will include how transporter proteins carrying nutrients, dietary supplements, medications and toxic chemicals work during pregnancies, how individual placenta cells respond to various stimuli in the laboratory, and how environmental factors influence placental transporters during healthy and unhealthy or complicated pregnancies.

The student-athletes, coaches, athletics administrators, alumni that comprise the Racial Justice Task Force has been divided into sub-committees to allow for more focused discussions and planning in specific areas of the Plan of Action: First Steps to Combat Racism. The task force will complete its full recommendations by the end of October.

The Weitzman School has established the Julian Abele Fellowship in Architecture, which will be given annually to a graduate architecture student or students. The Fellowship is named for the first Black architect to graduate from Penn.
