A new study by LDI fellows Polina Krass and Sarah Wood, and pediatric emergency medicine fellow Erin H. Sieke, and colleagues discovered in a national survey that only a small percentage of residents were comfortable with inserting contraceptive implants and implanting IUDs. The findings indicate that comprehensive training on adolescent sexual and reproductive health requires buy-in at the institutional level. Residency training programs and hospital leadership need to carve out time for residents to learn how to provide full-spectrum contraceptive services.

Penn Engineering’s Senior Design project winners have been announced, following a yearlong effort by fourth-year students to test and develop solutions to real-world problems. The top three projects from each department will compete in the annual Senior Design Competition, sponsored by the Engineering Alumni Society. Each winning team received a $2,000 prize.

The Center for Innovation & Precision Dentistry (CiPD) and Penn Health-Tech have awarded their second annual IDEA (Innovation in Dental Medicine and Engineering to Advance Oral Health) Prize to Kyle Vining, assistant professor of preventive and restorative sciences at Penn Dental Medicine, who also has a joint appointment at Penn Engineering, and Michael Mitchell, associate professor of bioengineering at Penn Engineering.

In a JAMA Network Open study, LDI senior fellows Carolyn C. Cannuscio, Raina M. Merchant, David A. Asch, Nandita Mitra, and David Grande, and colleagues tested whether consumers were more willing to share data if certain protections were implemented such as consent, data deletion, regulatory oversight, and transparency. The authors found that among these four protections, consent was seen as the most important to consumers.

Virginia M.Y. Lee, the John H. Ware 3rd Professor in Alzheimer’s Research in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Roy H. Hamilton, a professor of neurology and physical medicine and rehabilitation, and director of the brainSTIM Center were recognized for their achievements in April. Lee received the Sheila Essey Award for her research contributions in the search for the cause, prevention of, and cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
