    Azucena (Susy) Villalobos, a nurse in the surgical intensive care unit and master’s student at Penn Nursing, was inspired to join NAHN’s local chapter “by the wide breadth of work that these Latinx nurses were doing for their communities.”

  • State appointment for Penn Nursing professor

    Charlene W. Compher, a professor of nutrition science in Penn Nursing’s Department of Biobehavioral Health Sciences and director of Graduate Nutrition Programs, has been appointed to Pennsylvania’s State Board of Nursing. She will be the only dietitian/nutritionist representative on the board.

  • Transforming LGBTQ+ health

    Members from across the University and representatives from Philadelphia’s business, government, and community sectors gathered at the Inn at Penn to celebrate the Eidos LGBTQ+ Health Initiative with a launch party. Launched in January 2022, the Eidos LGBTQ+ Health Initiative is the first program of its kind, cultivating change efforts as a connector and think tank.

  • Penn Collaboratory to fund more than $2.1M in grants in year one

    The Penn Artificial Intelligence and Technology Collaboratory for Healthy Aging (PennAITech) focuses on identifying developing, evaluating, commercializing, and disseminating innovative technology and artificial intelligence methods/software to support aging. In its first year, twelve applicants from academia, industry, and clinical practice across the U.S. have been selected for funding.

  • Two Penn Nursing professors awarded Hillman Foundation Grants for research addressing the health of marginalized populations

    The Rita and Alex Hillman Foundation (announced $1.5 million in grants to support bold new programs addressing the health of marginalized populations. Two of the grant recipients are from Penn Nursing’s Department of Family and Community Health: J. Margo Brooks Carthon, the Tyson Family Endowed Term Chair for Gerontological Research and Associate Professor of Nursing; and Sara Jacoby, the Calvin Bland Fellow and Assistant Professor of Nursing.

  • Exploring equity barriers before a firearm safety trial

    When evaluating efforts to implement evidence-based interventions, ensuring that implementation is equitable across populations is important, but little guidance has been offered with regard to how to do so within the context of implementation trials. Before launching a hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial focused on firearm safety promotion in pediatric primary care, an interdisciplinary research team including investigators from Penn developed a five-step engagement process to prospectively ground the trial in an equity lens.

  • Mary D. Naylor receives Lienhard Award from National Academy of Medicine

    The Marian S. Ware Professor in Gerontology and Director of the NewCourtland Center for Transitions and Health, is the recipient of the 2022 Gustav O. Lienhard Award for Advancement of Health Care for improving the lives of millions of older adults living with complex health and social needs through her role as the architect of the Transitional Care Model and pioneer of the field of transitional care.

  • Rethinking criminalizing language in firearm research and intervention

    Injuries associated with firearm violence pose a persistent public health threat in the U.S. “Recidivism” is the word often used when referring to those who experience repeat firearm injuries. A commentary in the journal Preventive Medicine cautions against its use in clinical and public health discourse and as an evaluation descriptor for violence prevention and intervention programs.

  • American Academy of Nursing announces new Fellows

    Eleven nursing professionals with ties to Penn Nursing will be inducted as 2022 Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing. Three are current Penn faculty, with two of them being alums; the additional eight are all Penn Nursing alumni.
