  • Illinois nurse staffing legislation predicted to reduce hospital deaths and improve care

    According to a new study published in BMJ Open, proposed state legislation in Illinois would significantly improve nurse staffing in hospitals and likely save thousands of lives. The cost of improving nurse staffing could be offset by cost savings achieved by the impact of better nurse staffing on shorter length of hospital stays.

  • Exploring psychological resiliency of older adults with diabetes

    Studies suggest that exposure to the COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with a variety of different mental health consequences. Until now, few investigations have identified and separated the mental health consequences of exposure to the COVID-19 pandemic from preexisting factors in this age group. A new study shows more than half of the participants remained free of clinically significant levels of adverse mental health conditions during the pandemic.

    The Gerontological Society of America honored three Penn Nursing Professors with awards for their outstanding research, distinguished leadership in teaching and service, and for fostering new ideas in gerontological science: Kathryn H. Bowles, professor of nursing and the van Ameringen Chair in Nursing Excellence; Nancy A. Hodgson, the Anthony Buividas Term Chair in Gerontology, professor of nursing, and chair of the Department of Biobehavioral Health Sciences; and Pamela Z.

  • Treating sleep apnea with CPAP therapy is associated with lower risk of heart problems

    Penn Nursing’s Amy Sawyer, associate professor of sleep & health behavior in the Department of Biobehavioral Health Sciences, conducted a study showing that patients with untreated sleep apnea had a higher risk of experiencing a cardiovascular event, but the risk of incident heart problems was decreased in those who used CPAP therapy.

  • Penn Nursing is battling public health misinformation online

    In a novel effort to combat COVID-19 misinformation, a group of women researchers, including nurse scientists from the School of Nursing, launched the Dear Pandemic social media campaign in March 2020 to deliver comprehensive and timely information about the COVID-19 pandemic in a question-and-answer format.

  • Humans of Penn Nursing: Joshua Porat-Dahlerbruch

    After graduating with a Ph.D. in May, Porat-Dahlerbruch will attend Ben-Gurion University in Israel on a Fulbright Scholarship to pursue his proposed project, “Nurse Practitioner Integration into the Israeli Healthcare System.” Israel implemented the nurse practitioner role just a few years ago, but, he says, health system-level challenges are hindering their full ability to help improve health care.  Through his research project, Porat-Dahlerbruch will help ease the integration of nurse practitioners into the Israeli healthcare system.

  • Electronic health records usability issues linked to nurse burnout and patient outcomes

    A new study from Penn Nursing’s Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research has investigated associations between EHR usability and nurse job outcomes (burnout, job dissatisfaction, and intention to leave) and surgical patient outcomes (inpatient mortality and 30-day readmission). The study found that employing EHR systems with suboptimal usability was associated with higher odds of adverse nurse job outcomes and surgical patient mortality and readmission.
