  • Penn Nursing’s Bridgette M. Brawner awarded The International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses’ Diversity and Equity Award

    The Diversity and Equity award recognizes an ISPN member who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in providing culturally-sensitive mental health services. Brawner has conducted extensive research into the factors influencing HIV and AIDS among Black residents of Philadelphia, and focuses on how mental health conditions, such as depression in Black youth, correlate with unhealthy behaviors. In her clinical work, she partners with behavioral health providers on interventions for adolescents with mental illness and works with youth affected by HIV/AIDS.

  • ASPEN fellowship for Penn Nursing professor

    Sharon Y. Irving, associate professor of pediatric nursing and vice-chair of Penn Nursing’s Department of Family and Community Health, has been named a 2021 Fellow of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN). ASPEN Fellows are outstanding leaders in nutrition support, consistently contributing in education, practice, research and service to the field. A Fellow of ASPEN designation is the highest honor available to members.

  • Nurse work environment influences stroke outcomes

    In a new study from the School of Nursing’s Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research, researchers evaluated the association between the nurse work environment and readmission and length of stay for close to 200,000 hospitalized adult ischemic stroke patients in more than 500 hospitals. They found that in hospitals with better nurse work environments, ischemic stroke patients experienced lower odds of 7‐ and 30‐day readmissions and lower lengths of stay.

    On February 17, nurses from Penn Nursing and Penn Medicine shared their true, personal stories for Penn Nursing’s third annual Story Slam event. Due to the current guidelines and restrictions around the pandemic, the event was held virtually, but that did not lessen the impact or vibrancy of the storytellers and their tales, developed around the theme, “Stepping Up.”

    The Ruth M. Colket Endowed Chair in Pediatric Nursing and professor of nursing has been awarded the 2021 Drs. Vidyasagar and Nagamani Dharmapuri Award for Excellence in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.

  • Medical librarian Richard James confronts public health challenges In the midst of COVID-19

    Richard James has held the position of Nursing Liaison Librarian at the Biomedical Library for the last four years, but recently his efforts have been directed toward helping nurses and other medical professionals meet the extraordinary demands of global health crises. These efforts include an ongoing collaboration with the City of Philadelphia Department of Public Health and the delivery of a Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) developed by the World Health Organization

  • Community immersion as distance learning

    Community immersion classes are central to teaching nursing students about social determinants of health. But what happens when on-site engagement is suspended due to a pandemic? To adhere to social distancing guidelines during the COVID-19 outbreak, the School of Nursing moved its “Addressing the Social Determinants of Health: Community Engagement Immersion” class from an in-person community health education course to a distance-learning experience.

  • American Academy of Nursing names Linda Aiken a Living Legend

    The American Academy of Nursing has named Linda Aiken the Claire M. Fagin Leadership Professor in Nursing, director of the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research, professor of sociology in Penn’s School of Arts & Sciences, and Senior Fellow in the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics, a Living Legend. This honor is bestowed upon a person who has made significant contributions to nursing and health care over the course of their career.
