  • 28 community programs receive grants through Penn Medicine CAREs program

    The Penn Medicine CAREs Grant program supports faculty, students, and staff who volunteer in community-based programs outside of their jobs. This quarter, Penn Medicine CAREs awarded grants to 28 projects, many of which aim to fill vast needs in the community created by the COVID-19 pandemic, while others seek to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Featured Books: Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month

    This month’s Featured Books list was put together by Peter Van Do, director of Penn’s Pan-Asian American Community House, students, and library staff. The titles reflect the diversity of experiences among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and tackle questions of what it means to be part of the wider AAPI community.

  • Black Music City project awards: $48,000 in grants

    The Black Music City project announced that it is distributing a total of $48,000 to 23 Black creatives in the greater Philadelphia area to produce new artistic works inspired by Philadelphia’s rich Black music history. Black Music City is a collaboration between Philadelphia public music radio stations WXPN-FM and WRTI-FM and REC Philly.

  • Dental students, faculty ‘Give Kids a Smile’ with free care

    Penn Dental Medicine opened its doors during the month of April to children in the community, providing free dental care within the School’s pediatric care center, at Puentes de Salud, and aboard the PennSmiles dental van as part of Public Citizens for Children and Youth’s annual Give Kids a Smile.

  • Making Black lives matter in Philadelphia: Perspectives from the health sciences

    The first talk in a new lecture series featured a keynote address by Eugenia South, who addressed how the COVID-19 pandemic has hit many Black communities the hardest, how the initial vaccine roll-out has disproportionately vaccinated white individuals, and how these crises are linked through the common root cause of structural racism.

  • Featured Books: National Poetry Month

    This year marks the 25th annual National Poetry Month, a celebration of poets and poetry organized by the Academy of American Poets. Like last year, this year’s National Poetry Month celebrations are taking part online, while the Penn Libraries shares its selections of books and audiovisual resources.

    Penn’s Division of Human Resources has announced the 2021 honorees in four categories: Models of Excellence, Pillars of Excellence, Model Supervisor, and a special category, Sustaining Penn Through COVID-19. The awards go to staff members who show initiative, leadership, increased efficiency, and a deep commitment to service.

  • Growing agricultural biotech startup, 2019 President’s Innovation Prize winners Strella Biotechnology expands to lab space at the new Pennovation Lab

    The Pennovation Lab’s newest tenant, Strella Biotechnology, is expanding its agricultural innovation within the Pennovation Works ecosystem. The Lab is designed for companies that have secured early-stage funding and have outgrown their incubator space. With this new lease, nearly one third of the building is already under agreement.

  • Diversity in the Stacks: Bollywood and Hindi-language cinema

    Penn Libraries’ collections of Hindi films feature a range of popular and historically significant cinema that chronicles the growth of film culture in India, particularly the output of Bombay. It includes physical media, most of which are DVDs, as well as a growing collection of streaming video that includes films assigned in or used in courses at Penn.
