    The biennial award honors a Penn Nursing faculty member who has made a distinguished contribution to nursing scholarship. Bowles is the van Ameringen Chair in Nursing Excellence and a professor in Penn Nursing’s Department of Biobehavioral Health Sciences.

  • Prosthetic valve mismatches common in transcatheter valve replacement procedure, increasing risk of death

    A multi-institutional study, led by researchers from Penn Medicine, found that among patients who underwent a transcatheter aortic valve replacement, a high number experienced severe and moderate cases of prosthesis-patient mismatch—meaning the implanted heart valve is too small for the patient which can lead to inadequate blood flow.

  • Penn Dental awarded $1M scholarship grant from Delta Dental Community Care Foundation

    Delta Dental's Oral Health Education grant will award two $25,000 scholarships each year to dental medicine students who participate in community outreach as students and plan to work with underserved populations after graduation.

  • Penn Medicine researchers receive $18 million grant for the Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science

    The grant, awarded by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and National Institutes of Health, will fund the Center's study on the effects of advertising, packaging, and labeling on perceptions, use, and exposure to tobacco products.

  • L. Scott Levin to serve as President of American Society for the Surgery of the Hand

    Penn Medicine’s L. Scott Levin, the Paul B. Magnuson Professor of Bone and Joint Surgery, chairman of the department of Orthopedic Surgery, and a professor of plastic surgery. He will serve in this role through 2019.

  • Penn Medicine researchers receive “Big Data” grant from NIH to test new approach for personalized breast cancer treatments

    Despina Kontos, an associate professor of radiology, and Lewis A. Chodosh, chair of Cancer Biology and associate director of the Abramson Cancer Center, have received a five-year, $4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop tailored treatment options for breast cancer patients.

  • Neil C. Tomson receives National Institutes of Health grant

    The assistant professor of chemistry has been awarded the Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award for Early Stage Investigators grant. The five-year, $1.6 million grant supports Tomson’s research on electrostatic effects in model compounds of metalloenzyme active sites.

  • Penn Nursing study highlights rapid weight gain during infancy as possible risk factor for later obesity in children with autism

    A new study from Penn Nursing, published in the journal Autism, shows that children with autism spectrum disorder have the highest frequency of rapid weight gain during the first six months of life, which may put them at increased risk for childhood obesity.

  • Penn extends its global reach to improve health care education and quality of care in Southeast Asia

    Penn Medicine and Penn Nursing are partnering with Vingroup, a collaboration between the nonprofit university project, VinUni, and private health service provider, Vinmec, to create new undergraduate and graduate medical training programs in Vietnam.
