  • James Pikul awarded 2020 Moore Inventor Fellowship to develop ‘synthetic metabolism’

    Pikul is the first Penn researcher to win this award. He will receive $825,000 over three years, to support research on his metal-air scavenger technology, a new kind of hybrid energy system that combines the best qualities of batteries and “harvesters,” such as solar panels.

  • Penn researchers join NSF-Simons Foundation collaboration on the ‘Foundations of Deep Learning’

    Penn Engineering, Penn Arts & Sciences and the Wharton School will partner with an interdisciplinary team led by researchers at Johns Hopkins University in a project known as Transferable, Hierarchical, Expressive, Optimal, Robust, and Interpretable NETworks (THEORINET). The collaboration will receive $10 million over five years.

  • Penn researchers will study intersection of mechanics and chemistry as part of new NSF center

    Penn scientists and engineers are joining a multi-institution team of researchers to bring new knowledge to the field known as mechanochemistry. The team has been awarded a $1.8 million grant to establish the NSF Center for the Mechanical Control of Chemistry, one of three new Phase I Centers for Chemical Innovation funded through the National Science Foundation Division of Chemistry.

  • Jennifer Wilcox named Presidential Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering and Energy Policy

    Wilcox is the first faculty research appointment at the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy, based at the Stuart Weitzman School of Design. Her professorial appointment is in the School of Engineering and Applied Science’s Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. Her research focuses on innovative ways to avoid new CO2 emissions from entering the air as well as the removal of old emissions in order to mitigate the accumulating effects of fossil fuels on our planet.

  • Penn partners with three schools on NSF Engineering Research Center for the Internet of Things for Precision Agriculture

    The National Science Foundation has established the NSF Engineering Research Center for the Internet of Things for Precision Agriculture (IoT4Ag) with a five-year, $26 million grant to create advanced technologies for improving crop production and addressing interconnected food, energy and water security challenges.

  • César de la Fuente wins inaugural NEMO Prize, will develop rapid COVID virus breath tests

    Judges from the Perelman School of Medicine and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences awarded de la Fuente $80,000 to develop his paper-based tests that can be integrated directly into face masks and provide instant results at testing sites.

  • Karen Winey earns pair of scholarly awards for her work on polymer science

    In recognition of this work, the TowerBrook Foundation Faculty Fellow, professor and chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering has received the 2020 Herman F. Mark Senior Scholar Award from the American Chemical Society, and the 2020 Braskem Award for Excellence in Materials Science & Engineering from The American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

  • Rakesh Vohra wins SIGecom Test of Time Award

    The George A. Weiss and Lydia Bravo Weiss University Professor, has won for his paper, “Calibrated Learning and Correlated Equilibrium.” The SIGecom Test of Time Award recognizes research published between ten and twenty-five years ago that has stood the test of time in its field.

  • Shu Yang wins Manufacturing PA Innovation grant for developing snail-inspired adhesive

    Yang was awarded approximately $70,000 to fund an application of her “snail glue” research. This research centers on creating durable  gel-based adhesive that can be applied to open wounds, then harden into a protective film.
