Penn’s Brian Gregory Is ‘Making Major Strides’ in RNA Biology
Everyone has heard of DNA, the blueprint for life. But if it were up to Brian Gregory, an assistant professor of biology at the University of Pennsylvania, DNA’s close cousin, RNA, would get equal billing. Gregory studies RNA, or ribonucleic acid, primarily in plants in his lab at Penn, investigating not only how it functions as a code for building proteins but also how it serves to regulate gene expression.

Penn prof wins best documentary film award
Tukufu Zuberi, chair of the Department of Sociology and the Lasry Family Professor of Race Relations in the School of Arts and Sciences, is making a name for himself on the film festival circuit. His film “African Independence” won the Best Documentary Film award and earned Zuberi the Best Director award at its world premiere at the 2013 San Diego Black Film Festival. The film was Zuberi’s first.

Penn Vet Team Uncovers a Pathway That Stimulates Bone Growth
PHILADELPHIA — Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine have discovered that a protein called Jagged-1 stimulates human stem cells to differentiate into bone-producing cells. This protein could help both human and animal patients heal from bone fractures faster and may form the basis of treatments for a rare metabolic condition called Alagille syndrome.

Penn Geologists Quantify, Characterize Sediment Carried by Mississippi Flood to Louisiana Wetlands
PHILADELPHIA — The spring 2011 flood on the Mississippi was among the largest floods ever, the river swelling over its banks and wreaking destruction in the surrounding areas. But a University of Pennsylvania-led study also shows that the floods reaped environmental benefits — transporting and laying down new sediment in portions of the Delta — that may help maintain the area’s wetlands.
