Penn’s Social Policy & Practice and African-American Resource Center to Host ‘Let’s Talk About Race’
PHILADELPHIA — The School of Social Policy & Practice and the African-American Resource Center at the University of Pennsylvania will host “Let’s Talk About Race” Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 5 p.m. in the Claudia Cohen Hall Terrace Room. “Let’s Talk About Race” is a frank, interactive discussion, offering people of all races, backgrounds and beliefs a way to foster communication and create understanding. It is free and open to the public.

Penn Study Sheds Light on the Complexity of Gene Therapy for Congenital Blindness
PHILADELPHIA — Independent clinical trials, including one conducted at the Scheie Eye Institute at the Perelman School of Medicine, have reported safety and efficacy for Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), a congenital form of blindness caused by mutations in a gene (RPE65) required for recycling vitamin A in the retina. Inherited retinal degenerative diseases were previously considered untreatable and incurable.

Penn Research Team Awarded $2.75 Million as Part of New ‘Swarm’ Computing Center
PHILADELPHIA — Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania are participating in a massive, interdisciplinary collaboration known as the TerraSwarm Research Center, which will study the potential applications — and risks — of “swarm-based” computing and robotics. Based at the Swarm Lab at the University of California, Berkeley, the nine-university project has received a $27.5 million, five-year grant from the Semiconductor Research Corporation and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency as a part of the Focus Center Research Program.

Penn Physicists Help Show Math Behind Growth of 'Coffee Rings'
PHILADELPHIA — Last year, a team of University of Pennsylvania physicists showed how to undo the “coffee-ring effect,” a commonplace occurrence when drops of liquid with suspended particles dry, leaving a ring-shaped stain at the drop’s edges. Now the team is exploring how those particles stack up as they reach the drop’s edge, and they discovered that different particles make smoother or rougher deposition profiles at the drop edge depending on their shape.

Penn honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with symposium

The annual Commemorative Symposium on Social Change, which began on Jan. 15 and runs through Feb. 1, offers events that include talks, volunteer opportunities, musical performances, film viewings, and a candlelight vigil.
