PHILADELPHIA – Five faculty members at the University of Pennsylvania have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Two are from Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine, two are from its School of Arts and Sciences and one has appointments in both schools.

PHILADELPHIA — H. Lee Sweeney, Ph.D., the William Maul Measey Professor at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, has been named the inaugural director of Penn’s Center for Orphan Disease Research and Therapy. The primary mission of the Center is to expedite the translational science and development of novel therapies for rare and orphan diseases.

Two senior undergraduate scholarship recipients at the University of Pennsylvania shared their personal collegiate journeys as they and more than 250 other scholarship beneficiaries met with their benefactors and guests at the Fall 2012 Scholarship Celebration this month. It was an evening of making acquaintances, renewing friendships and cementing bonds.

Penn’s “Thinking With the Past” lecture series has returned with a fresh lineup of speakers, but in a new home: the Parkway Central Library at 1901 Vine St. The series, which debuted last spring, features Penn history professors discussing and signing their recent books. All of the lectures are free and open to the public. Each talk will begin at 7 p.m. in Room 108 of the Free Library. The Penn Book Center will provide books for sale.

For two decades, Scott Reikofski has influenced University of Pennsylvania fraternities and sororities, as well as Greek life nationally and internationally. Reikofski, Penn’s Director of Fraternity Sorority Life, has designed programs and assisted other college campuses with fraternity/sorority life issues and worked to create partnerships with other campuses.

More than 100 students from Lea Elementary School in West Philadelphia will become honorary college students at the University of Pennsylvania tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 1 during College Day 2012.The goal of these events, held three times each year, is to excite students about the college experience, so they will be motivated to work hard in middle and high school and strive for a college education.

Penn basketball fans who can’t make it to The Palestra to see a game in person can soon catch the Quakers live on national television. Three of the men’s basketball team’s games will be televised on the NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus) beginning on Saturday, Dec. 8, when Penn hosts Big 5 foe Villanova at 8 p.m.

A new study by Penn economist Kevin Gillen finds that homes in the City of Philadelphia have retained more of their value compared to those in the region’s sprawling suburbs. “Walkability” is a key reason why, Gillen says. Philadelphia is one of the most walkable cities in America. Sections of Center City are sometimes referred to as a walker's paradise because they are so close to shopping, restaurants, entertainment, and public transportation, says Gillen.

On Dec. 6, 1887, the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania resolved to send “an exploring expedition to Babylonia” (modern-day southern Iraq) with the stipulation that the University would build “suitable accommodations” to house any artifacts that the expedition team would bring back. This act set the course for what would become the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.
