PHILADELPHIA – At a black-tie gala Friday, Oct. 26, the University of Pennsylvania will honor alumni and alumni groups who, through their accomplishments or continued involvement, have brought honor and prestige to Penn.

Alison Sweeney is one of the newest faculty members in the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the School of Arts and Sciences, but until she came to Penn, she didn’t fit into either of those disciplinary boxes. She mostly studied sea life, traveling to places like Palau in the western Pacific Ocean to study exotic squid and giant clams.

PHILADELPHIA — Changes in the ability to smell and taste can be caused by a simple cold or upper respiratory tract infection, but they may also be among the first signs of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Now, new research from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania has revealed an association between an impaired sense of smell and myasthenia gravis (MG), a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease characterized by fluctuating fatigue and muscle weakness.

The fair will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Houston Hall’s Bodek Lounge. A Study Abroad Fair featuring credit-granting opportunities for undergraduate students will be held concurrently in Houston Hall’s Hall of Flags.

PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania has received an undisclosed gift from father and son philanthropists Joel and William Smilow to support Penn Medicine’s translational research activities, naming the Smilow Center for Translational Research in the Raymond and Ruth Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
