PHILADELPHIA -- Morris Arboretum is calling all scarecrows for its annual Scarecrow Design Contest. This year, in addition to Designer scarecrows, participants are invited to create a Storybook themed scarecrow in conjunction with the Arboretum’s Storytime reading program. These scarecrows, more than 30(!), will be on display at the Arboretum for 3 weeks along Scarecrow Walk at the Oak Allée from Saturday, Oct. 6 through Sunday Oct. 21.

The Penn Vet Working Dog Center has been operating as a virtual research-and-training facility since its creation in 2007, but it now has a real home at 3401 Grays Ferry Ave. Located at Penn’s new South Bank site in Grays Ferry, the Center provides the program with a space specifically designed for the study of search-and-rescue dogs, and the training of future working dogs.

Karen Okigbo really is a mover and a shaker. And the University of Pennsylvania is the right spot for her. Born in Nigeria, Okigbo lived in Kenya for a few years before she flew halfway around the world and relocated to Fargo, N.D., with her family. When she found herself at the top of her class in high school, she decided to hit the East Coast and moved up to the Ivy League, where she earned a B.A. in political science at Princeton University.
