Penn Medicine's Aaron Beck Receives International Award for Contributions to Medicine
PHILADELPHIA — Aaron T. Beck, MD, emeritus professor, Department of Psychiatry at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and director of the Aaron T. Beck Psychopathology Research Center, has been awarded the Prince Mahidol Award for "exemplary contributions in the field of medicine." WXPN General Manager Roger LaMay Elected to NPR Board
PHILADELPHIA — Roger LaMay, general manager of WXPN, the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A (Adult Album Alternative) music and noncommercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, has been elected as a Member Director of the NPR Board.The announcement by NPR (National Public Radio) was made on August 14 to its member stations. LaMay was elected by authorized representatives of NPR member stations to a three-year term beginning in November 2012.

Penn Grad Participates in Philly Fellows Program
College graduates have had a difficult time finding jobs in the past several years, but a Philadelphia organization is giving them a boost, matching recent grads with non-profit organizations for a year-long placement. The Philly Fellows program is open to college seniors who apply in fall semester for the positions, which begin in July. This year, 123 people applied for 15 positions.

Researchers from Penn, USGS and the Smithsonian Augment Climate Records Using Fossil Pollen
PHILADELPHIA — Ancient pollen and charcoal preserved in deeply buried sediments in Egypt’s Nile Delta document the region’s ancient droughts and fires, including a huge drought 4,200 years ago associated with the demise of Egypt’s Old Kingdom, the era known as the pyramid-building time.

Penn Annenberg Study: Regular Patient/Clinician Interaction Can Help Increase Follow-Up Cancer Screening
The line “talk to your doctor,” which appears in so many medical-related advertisements, is apparently right. An analysis of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients who maintained regular contact with their clinicians (doctors, nurses, specialists) indicates those patients are more likely to follow recommendations for detecting cancer recurrence than patients who do not. In fact, researchers found CRC patients were more than twice as likely to adhere to medical follow up procedures if they had regular patient clinician information engagement (PCIE).
