$4.6 Million Renewal from NIH to Penn Program that Aims to Diversify Biomedical Education
Yvonne Paterson, PhD, professor of Microbiology, at the Perelman School of Medicine, and professor and associate dean, at the School of Nursing, has been awarded an almost $5 million renewal by the National Institute for General Medical Sciences for the University of Pennsylvania Postdoctoral Opportunities in Research and Training, or PENN-PORT, the postdoctoral-training program she leads.

Penn's Arthur Ross Gallery Presents California Impressionism: Masters of Light from the Irvine Museum
PHILADELPHIA — California Impressionism presents more than 30 paintings that capture the sublime beauty of California from 1885 to 1931. Lent by The Irvine Museum, this traveling exhibition includes works by Franz Bischoff, Colin Campbell Cooper, Anna Hills, Granville Redmond, and Guy Rose, among others.

Penn Researchers and Colleagues Create a Cheaper, Cleaner, More Efficient Catalyst for Burning Methane
PHILADELPHIA — As the world’s accessible oil reserves dwindle, natural gas has become an increasing important energy source. The primary component of natural gas is methane, which has the advantage of releasing less carbon dioxide when it’s burned than do many other hydrocarbon fuels. But because of the very stable structure of the methane molecule, it can be difficult to access the energy stored within. When unburned methane escapes into the atmosphere, it’s a greenhouse gas 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.

High school students go for gold in ‘Robolympics’
The night before the Olympic torch was lit in London, a different sort of international competition was beginning at the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Called the Robolympics, the event is a yearly contest put on by Penn’s Summer Academy in Applied Science and Technology, or SAAST, designed as a broad test of the robotics knowledge and skills its students have developed over the previous three weeks.

Revamped Commons to increase campus dining options
When the Fall semester begins, students, faculty, and staff will find new, delicious dining possibilities on campus, including more fresh, locally produced food. After a summer-long renovation project, the Class of 1920 Commons, at 3800 Locust Walk, will feature an attractive new Starbucks, complete with a fireplace. The shop will serve coffee, of course, as well as sandwiches, salads, and other beverages.

Penn Symposium to honor veterinarian Ralph Brinster
Last September, Ralph Brinster, a researcher in the School of Veterinary Medicine, became the first veterinarian to receive the National Medal of Science, one of the most prestigious awards bestowed upon scientists in the United States. Later this month, a unique meeting will honor that achievement and place in context Brinster’s half-century career at Penn.

Charles L. Kane of Penn Awarded the Dirac Medal for Contributions to Theoretical Physics
