Penn and Bryn Mawr Sign Agreement to Fast-track Undergrads Into Penn Engineering Master’s Programs
PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania and Bryn Mawr College are launching a new program that will allow undergraduates at Bryn Mawr to gain early admission into a master’s degree program offered by Penn’s School of Engineering and Applied Science. The arrangement effectively allows Bryn Mawr students to obtain their bachelor’s degree in four years and then, through Penn, obtain their master’s degree with just one additional year of study.

Penn Vet saves a puppy that couldn’t eat
When Basil was born, everything seemed fine. For his owner, Brent Grove, who drives a bus and raises dogs on his Westminister, Md., farm, the German shepherd was the latest, cutest addition to his pack. Basil nursed like a normal puppy, but when he graduated to solid food, he couldn’t keep it down. Grove knew something was seriously wrong and local vets diagnosed megaesophogus; something was blocking food from getting to Basil’s stomach.

Penn Dental Medicine hosts 5K for oral cancer awareness
It’s more deadly than skin, cervical, or thyroid cancer. Yet the general public knows much less about oral cancer, its prevention, and its treatment. Penn Dental Medicine students and faculty are hoping to raise awareness about the disease on Sunday, April 29, by hosting the 4th Annual Philly Oral Cancer Walk and, for the first time, a 5K run.

Penn Geneticists Identify Genes Linked to Western African Pygmies’ Small Stature
PHILADELPHIA — If Pygmies are known for one trait, it is their short stature: Pygmy men stand just 4’11” on average. But the reason why these groups are so short and neighboring groups are not remains unclear. Scientists have proposed various theories based on natural selection, including that Pygmies’ reduced size lowered nutritional requirements, helped them better handle hot climates, or allowed them to reach sexual maturity at an earlier age.

Penn Museum exhibit explores Maya culture and time
Did the ancient Maya believe December 2012 would bring the apocalypse? Opening Saturday, May 5, the Penn Museum’s new exhibition, “MAYA 2012: Lords of Time,” will explore end-of-the-world prophecies and many other intricacies of Maya culture, with a particular emphasis on their calendar and concepts of time.

Fun for all at Philadelphia International Children’s Festival
Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages, step right up for the 28th Annual Philadelphia International Children’s Festival, a three-day extravaganza filled with theater, music, and dance. From May 3-5 at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, the Children’s Festival presents interactive programs designed for audiences that are young and young-at-heart.

Clark Park hosts Science Discovery Day
West Philadelphia’s beloved Clark Park, at 43rd Street and Chester Avenue, will be transformed into a science-themed playground on Sunday, April 29, as part of the Philadelphia Science Festival. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the park will play host to Science Discovery Day, a free event during which science lovers of all ages can learn and have fun at the same time.

Julian Siggers Appointed Williams Director of Penn Museum
PHILADELPHIA — Julian Siggers has been appointed the Williams Director of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, effective July 1. The announcement was made today by Penn President Amy Gutmann and Provost Vincent Price.

6 Exhibitions for PennDesign’s Terry Adkins
As a teenager growing up in the 1960s, Terry Adkins, a fine arts professor in the University of Pennsylvania School of Design, was influenced by the major cultural, political and social events of the era -- and the music of Jimmy Hendrix. Adkins’ recital, “The Principalities,” which opened April 26 at Galerie Zidoun in Luxembourg, features that era and the singer, songwriter and guitarist, who died in 1970 at age 27.

Morris Arboretum Annual Plant Sale
