Penn-based Report Reflects Rise of Think Tanks in Underrepresented Regions of the World
PHILADELPHIA –- Launched in 2006, the University of Pennsylvania’s “Global Go-To Think Tank Rankings” annual report has become an authoritative source for the top public policy research institutes in the world. James McGann, assistant director of Penn’s International Relations Program, directs the Think Tanks and Civil Society Program at Penn. People who suffer from sleep disturbances are at major risk for obesity, diabetes, and coronary artery disease, according to new research from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

The tie between pets and people in disasters
Of the many heartbreaking stories that emerged from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, some of the most indelible involved pets. Some were left behind or ran away in fear during the chaos of the storm. Others were forcibly separated from their families when their owners boarded rescue vehicles or entered shelters. In New Orleans alone, thousands of lost animals roamed the streets once the floodwaters subsided.

Penn’s efforts to save energy, save money, and educate the community about sustainability get an added boost twice a year, when the University’s Green Fund announces which projects will receive seed money to promote green living.

Top 10 list
Research conducted by a Penn scholar was named one of 2011’s “Top 10 New Findings in Parenting” by TIME magazine. The study, from Penn Nursing Professor Jennifer Pinto-Martin and colleagues, found that premature infants are five times more likely to have autism than children born at normal weight. The children, some born as small as about a pound, were followed for 21 years, making this study one of the most remarkable of its kind.

For the Record: Joseph Wharton
When the Wharton School was established in 1881, a groundbreaking branch of higher education was created for the study of business management. Founded with a $100,000 donation from industrialist Joseph Wharton, the school, known then as the Wharton School of Finance and Economy, was launched at a time when many people didn’t know the value of a business education.
