Eight Professors Named 2012 Penn Fellows
PHILADELPHIA – Eight University of Pennsylvania professors have been named Penn Fellows for 2012. The announcement was made by Provost Vincent Price and Lynn Hollen Lees, vice provost for faculty.

Penn Research: Gout Flares Reduced With Protein-trapping Treatment
Patients with gout – a painful type of inflammatory arthritis caused by the crystallization of urates in soft tissues – are advised to start treatment that lowers uric acid levels in the blood. Unfortunately, as the long-term medication starts to break down crystals deposited in the joints, many patients experience gout attacks caused by the release of crystals from softened deposits.

Penn Honors Martin Luther King Jr. with Day of Service
PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania will remember Martin Luther King Jr. with the Commemorative Symposium on Social Change, a series of community events that runs through Feb. 3. Volunteers are still needed for the MLK Day of Service at Penn, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, with a community breakfast inside Houston Hall’s Hall of Flags at 3417 Spruce St.

Morris Arboretum Publishes Photographic Record ‘Through the Lens of Paul W. Meyer’
PHILADELPHIA –- Celebrating the beauty of its accomplishments, the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania has chronicled its past with the publication of a book of photographs by longtime Arboretum director Paul W. Meyer. The 96-page book is an assemblage of the best of the thousands of photos Meyer has taken during the past 10 years at the Arboretum, nestled in the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia.

"In Material: Fiber 2012" at Penn’s Arthur Ross Gallery
PHILADELPHIA — “In Material: Fiber 2012” opens at the University of Pennsylvania’s Arthur Ross Gallery on Saturday, Jan. 28. Featuring four artists who bring innovation to the field of fiber art through their use of unexpected materials, “In Material” deconstructs the popular definition of textile art. California-based Lucy Arai re-invigorates the practice of sashiko, a decorative stitching process, and applies it to handmade paper and mixed media.

Penn Launches Commemorative Symposium on Social Change Honoring Martin Luther King Jr.
PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania will remember Martin Luther King Jr. with the Commemorative Symposium on Social Change, a series of community events that runs from Jan. 13 through Feb. 2. All MLK Symposium events are free and open to the public. They include workshops, discussions, panels, lectures, performances, special presentations, award ceremonies, interfaith programs and documentary-film screenings.

PHILADELPHIA - Four faculty members at the University of Pennsylvania have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Three from Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine and one from its School of Arts and Sciences.

PHILADELPHIA — Washington State’s higher education system is adrift, failing to grant bachelor’s degrees to enough Washingtonians and forcing the state’s high-tech economy to rely on talent imported from other states and countries, according to a study from researchers at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education.

Penn Museum 125th Anniversary Celebration, Launch of Online Collections Database
The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology on the Penn campus in Philadelphia dates its official founding to December 6, 1887. On that date, the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania resolved to send “an exploring expedition to Babylonia”—with the stipulation that the University would build “suitable accommodations” to house any artifacts that the first expedition team, and others, would bring back.

Penn Researchers Shorten Time for Manufacturing of Personalized Ovarian Cancer Vaccine
PHILADELPHIA -- Researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania are in the midst of testing a personalized, dendritic cell vaccine in patients with recurrent ovarian, primary peritoneal or fallopian tube cancer – a group of patients who typically have few treatment options.
