Nursing prof helps children stay fit through dance
Several years ago, Terri Lipman, the Miriam Stirl Endowed Term Professor of Nutrition in the Penn School of Nursing, conducted a survey of West Philadelphia parents to find out why their children were not more active. Parents responded that there was no safe place for their children to play, after school programs had been cut and school gym class did not provide sufficient physical activity.

In New Book, Penn Researcher Says Most Government Programs Don’t Work
PHILADELPHIA — A University of Pennsylvania researcher says most government social programs don’t work, a claim he is certain will not endear him to liberals. But he also says conservatives will not like hearing that there are programs that do work. In a new book, The Third Lie: Why Government Programs Don’t Work and a Blueprint for Change, Richard J. Gelles also says the current economic situation has destroyed the middle class.

Nominate Models of Excellence by Nov. 4

University staff members often go above and beyond the call of duty and now is the time of year to nominate co-workers and supervisors for the Models of Excellence awards. The annual honor recognizes employees whose outstanding efforts far exceed job expectations, and whose contributions have added substantially to Penn’s success. Nominations are due by Friday, Nov. 4.

Penn’s Field Center for Children’s Policy Practice & Research Hosts Senate Committee Public Hearing
PHILADELPHIA — The Field Center for Children’s Policy, Practice & Research will host a public hearing, “Foster Care: Aging Out – Options and Obstacles,” Wednesday, Nov. 2, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in Claudia Cohen Hall, 249 S. 36th St., on the University of Pennsylvania campus.

Penn Research Shows Mouthwash Routine May Cut Risk of Preterm Birth
PHILADELPHIA — Research from the University of Pennsylvania has shown that rinsing with mouthwash isn’t just good for oral health, it may be associated with a reduction in the incidence of preterm birth in pregnant women with periodontal disease. In the study, pregnant women with periodontal disease who adhered to an antimicrobial mouthwash routine had less than half the incidence of premature births than members of a control group.

Vampire film haunts Irvine on Halloween night
Move over “Phantom of the Opera.” This Halloween, vampires rule. In a new twist to Penn’s annual Halloween concert tradition, vampire Count Orlok will assume this year’s frightening duties on Monday, Oct. 31, at 7:15 p.m. in Irvine Auditorium. The 1922 German classic movie “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror,” an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula,” will be the featured presentation.

Take Penn classes for credit or fun
Many staff members use Penn’s tuition benefits for their children or spouse, but working in an academic environment inspires some employees to take classes themselves, too. Each year, about 1,400 employees, or about 11 percent of Penn staff and faculty, enroll in classes on campus for credit or just for fun.

Penn History Professor Steven Hahn Elected to Pulitzer Prize Board
PHILADELPHIA – Steven Hahn of the University of Pennsylvania has been elected to the 20-member Pulitzer Prize Board. Hahn is the Roy F. and Jeannette P. Nichols Professor of History at Penn.Hahn won the Pulitzer Prize for history in 2004 for A Nation Under Our Feet: Black Political Struggles in the Rural South from Slavery to the Great Migration. The book also received the Bancroft Prize for Best Book in American History and the Merle Curti Prize in Social History given by the Organization of American Historians.
