Chuck Bednarik Statue to Be Unveiled at Franklin Field Prior to Penn-Cornell Football Game on Nov. 19
PHILADELPHIA – The funding is completed, and the work is very nearly done. The Chuck Bednarik statue will soon be a reality. The University of Pennsylvania has announced the formal dedication of the Bednarik statue on Saturday, Nov. 19, prior to the Quakers’ football game against Cornell that kicks off at 1 p.m. The statue will be located inside Gate 2 on the North side of Franklin Field, and will be complemented by a collage honoring the historical significance of the Philadelphia Eagles during their time playing at Franklin Field.

Lab-Made Skin Cells Will Aid Transplantation, Cancer, Drug Research, Say Penn Scientists
PHILADELPHIA - The pigmented cells called melanocytes aren't just for making freckles and tans. Melanocytes absorb ultraviolet light, protecting the skin from the harmful effects of the sun. They also are the cells that go haywire in melanoma, as well as in more common conditions as vitiligo and albinism.

Penn Ranked Among Most Affordable Private Institutions
PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania has been named one of the most affordable private colleges in the United States. The ranking was issued by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance and lists “the private universities and liberal arts colleges that combine outstanding quality with affordability.” Penn was ranked sixth among the nation’s top 100 private universities.

Penn Vet Hosts Free Lecture, “First Aid Care for Your Pet”
Philadelphia, PA – On Saturday, November 5 the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) will host a free, open-to-the-public lecture called “First Aid Care for Your Pet,” at Penn Vet in Philadelphia, PA. Beginning at 10:00 AM, Dr. Deborah Mandell, staff veterinarian of Ryan Hospital’s Emergency Service, will teach how to determine if a pet is in an emergency situation, and if so, what first-aid can be performed at home. Who: Penn Vet, pet owners, interested members of the public.

Raymond G. Perelman to Receive the University of Pennsylvania Medal for Distinguished Achievement
PHILADELPHIA -- University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann will present prominent Philadelphia philanthropist Raymond G. Perelman with the University of Pennsylvania Medal for Distinguished Achievement, one of the University’s highest honors, at an Oct. 26 reception celebrating the naming of the Raymond and Ruth Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

'Climate Crises in Human History' Set for Saturday, Nov. 19, at Penn Museum
As scientists and other scholars study rapid climate changes and climate crises affecting different parts of the world today, relatively little discussion is being focused on climate crises faced by humans in the past. The ancient Maya, the Saharan ancestors of the ancient Egyptians, ancient Romans and medieval Europeans are among many cultures who have faced dramatic climate change, adapting or not adapting to changing conditions throughout the millennia.

Penn Study Explains Paradox of Insulin Resistance Genetics
PHILADELPHIA - Obesity and insulin resistance are almost inevitably associated with increases in lipid accumulation in the liver, a serious disease that can deteriorate to hepatitis and liver failure. A real paradox in understanding insulin resistance is figuring out why insulin-resistant livers make more fat. Insulin resistance occurs when the body does a poor job of lowering blood sugars.

Mark O. Winkelman Named Chair of Penn Medicine Board
PHILADELPHIA -- Mark O. Winkelman, a member of the University of Pennsylvania’s Board of Trustees, has been named chair of Penn Medicine, effective Nov. 1. He currently serves as a member of the Penn Medicine Board and its Executive Committee.The announcement was made by David L. Cohen, chairman of Penn’s Board of Trustees, and Penn President Amy Gutmann.
