Penn Study Explains Paradox of Insulin Resistance Genetics
PHILADELPHIA - Obesity and insulin resistance are almost inevitably associated with increases in lipid accumulation in the liver, a serious disease that can deteriorate to hepatitis and liver failure. A real paradox in understanding insulin resistance is figuring out why insulin-resistant livers make more fat. Insulin resistance occurs when the body does a poor job of lowering blood sugars.

Mark O. Winkelman Named Chair of Penn Medicine Board
PHILADELPHIA -- Mark O. Winkelman, a member of the University of Pennsylvania’s Board of Trustees, has been named chair of Penn Medicine, effective Nov. 1. He currently serves as a member of the Penn Medicine Board and its Executive Committee.The announcement was made by David L. Cohen, chairman of Penn’s Board of Trustees, and Penn President Amy Gutmann.

White House and School of Social Policy & Practice Host Dialogue on HIV/AIDS Strategy
The White House Office of National AIDS Policy, along with the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy & Practice, hosted a panel, “Sustaining the Community-Based Response to HIV,” Oct. 20 at Penn. About 150 attended.

Penn Women’s Center kitchen goes green
When the Penn Women’s Center (PWC) decided to add a kitchen to its 3643 Locust Walk home, Director Felicity Paxton envisioned a space with just a few sustainable features. The PWC ended up with a dedicated green space far beyond Paxton’s wildest dreams. Over the summer, a former PWC office was transformed into a stylish, completely sustainable kitchen. With its recycled wood cabinets and countertop, energy-saving appliances and worm compost box, the kitchen is a model of sustainability.

Penn’s Ralph Brinster Receives National Medal of Science at White House in Live-Streamed Event
PHILADELPHIA — Ralph Brinster of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine has received the National Medal of Science. The award is the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on scientists and engineers.

Community farm takes root in Southwest Philly
