Marjorie Rendell to Speak Today at Civic House
PHILADELPHIA – Marjorie Rendell, a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and a member of the Board of Overseers for the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, will speak at 4:30 p.m. today at Civic House, 3914 Locust Walk on the Penn campus. As part of the Penn Women in Leadership Series, Rendell, a Penn alumna, will speak about her experiences in law and philanthropy. A former first lady of Pennsylvania, she has served as chair of the Avenue of the Arts and was founder of the Philadelphia chapter of Philadelphia Reads/Power Partners.

Penn Vet Hosts Free Lecture in Radnor: “Caring for Older Pets”
On Tuesday, December 6 the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) will host a free, open-to-the-public lecture called “Caring for Older Pets: Healthcare advice on geriatric and end-of-life issues,” at Penn Medicine in Radnor, PA. Beginning at 6:30 PM, Dr. Meryl Littman, associate professor of medicine at Penn Vet, will talk about the special considerations when caring for older pets and how to handle those difficult decisions end-of-life issues bring.

Morris Arboretum’s Horticulture Center Awarded Montco Land Development Award
On November 16, the Montgomery County Planning Commission presented its Montgomery Awards, acknowledging outstanding land development and revitalization achievements in Montgomery County. These awards are dedicated to raising awareness about planning and design in our communities; they honor developers, consultants, organizations, and municipalities for their commitment and contributions to the enhancement of Montgomery County.

Antibiotics for Acne Linked to Sore Throat, Penn Study Shows
Oral antibiotics used to treat acne are linked to symptoms of sore throat, according to a study by researchers with the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, published Online First in the Archives of Dermatology , one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Penn Sociology Professor Studies Talk at the Brink
In October 1962, following the discovery of Soviet nuclear missile sites in Cuba, U.S. President John F. Kennedy called his top advisors together to determine America’s response. It was no time to mince words. America was on the brink of war and the fate of the world hung in the balance. For two weeks, President Kennedy met almost daily, and sometimes two or three times a day with the National Security Council Executive Committee, known as ExComm and secretly tape recorded their meetings.

Penn Medicine Physicians Receive Five-Year, $7.5 Million Grant for Breast Cancer Screening Research
University of Pennsylvania researchers have received a five-year, $7.5 million grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to create the Penn Center for Innovation in Personalized Breast Cancer Screening (PCIPS), dedicated to studying emerging methods of breast cancer detection.

University of Pennsylvania to Launch New Online Web Tool for K-16 Global Studies Educators
PHILADELPHIA— Four centers at the University of Pennsylvania have joined to create the Greater Philadelphia Education Network Web site, a gateway to global resources for Delaware Valley K-16 educators. The new site, www.philaglobaled.org, is the work of the South Asia Center, African Studies Center, Center for East Asian Studies and Middle East Center.
