Penn welcomes Class of 2013 at Convocation
Convocation—held for the first time in Penn history inside the Palestra because of threatening skies—opened the academic year Tuesday evening with a program of inspiring speeches, musical performances and plenty of Penn spirit. Steeped in tradition, the ceremony formally welcomed the Class of 2013 to campus and the Penn family. Convocation is one of only three instances when the entire Class of 2013 will assemble as a group—Hey Day and Commencement are the other two.

2010 Commencement will find Penn seniors sporting caps, gowns made of recycled plastic bottles
Plastic water and soda bottles that are said to last forever in a landfill will instead grace the 2,500 or so Penn graduating seniors next spring as their commencement caps and gowns. The GreenWeaver line of regalia by Oak Hall Cap & Gown, a Virginia manufacturer of academic apparel, is Penn’s latest greening effort. Under a recent agreement with the company, Penn will adorn its Class of 2010 seniors in gowns and caps made of 100 percent, post-consumer recycled plastic bottles.

Students Perform Leading Edge Medical Research at Penn Through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
PHILADELPHIA –- The University of Pennsylvania received more than $650,000 in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to fund 30 summer research experiences for high school teachers and high school and college students. This program is designed to speed the pace of scientific achievement, encourage and prepare the next generation of students to participate in the health-related sciences and promote job creation and economic development.

Penn School of Social Policy & Practice Launches Gerontology Program With Grant From Hartford
PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy & Practice is launching a program in working with older adults, with the help of a two-year, $10,000 grant from the John A. Hartford Foundation and a matching $10,000 contribution from a donor.

Three Exhibit Deal
Visitors can get three for the price of none on September 10 at the Institute of Contemporary Art’s Fall Opening Reception for three new exhibits. “Dance with Camera,” on display through March 21, is an exhibition (pictured) and screening program that explores a crossover between artists and dancers who make choreography for the camera. Spanning 70 years of art and film, it features works in film, video, and still photography that exemplify the ways dance has compelled visual artists to record bodies moving in time and space.

Botswana-UPenn Partnership helps tackle national crisis
Botswana, in southern Africa, suffers from the second highest HIV/AIDS rate in the world, with nearly a quarter of the adult population infected. Before the virus began to devastate the country, average life expectancy was almost 70 years. By 2004, it had dropped to 47.

MacHomer
“MacHomer” is Shakespeare by way of Springfield. The fictional Springfield, that is—the home of tv’s “The Simpsons.” This one-man production runs from Oct. 14 through 17 at the Annenberg Center, and features Rick Miller performing Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” as various characters from the iconic “Simpsons” tv show. In all, Miller recreates more than 50 characters on stage, including Homer in the tragic title role and Marge as Lady Macbeth.
