PHILADELPHIA –- Kirk Byron Jones, professor of ethics and preaching at Andover Newton Theological School in Newton, Mass., will speak at the University of Pennsylvania’s 2009 Baccalaureate ceremonies on Sunday, May 17, in Irvine Auditorium, 3401 Spruce St.Two ceremonies will be held, one at 1:30 p.m. for graduates whose last names begin with A through K and another at 3 p.m. for the L-Z graduates.

PHILADELPHIA -- Researchers in condensed matter physics at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Chicago have created an experimental and computer model to study how jamming, the physical process in which collections of particles are crammed together to behave as solids, might affect the behavior of systems in which thermal motion is important, such as molecules in a glass.

Joshua Bennett, a rising College senior, performed in the East Room of the White House for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at an evening celebrating poetry, music and spoken word May 12. The lineup included legendary actor James Earl Jones, writers Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman, jazz bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding, jazz pianist Eric Lewis, composer and lyricist Lin-Manuel Miranda and spoken word performer Mayda Del Valle.

PHILADELPHIA -- The Penn Institute for Urban Research at the University of Pennsylvania will host “The Future of Cities: The World, The Nation, Philadelphia,” a free, public discussion between Philadelphia officials and experts on the city’s bold new vision for sustainable planning and infrastructure investment, at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 14.
