Music lovers in central Pennsylvania woke up Halloween morning to find a new alternative on their radio to those tired commercial stations: WXPN. Penn’s renowned radio station, famous for its unique blend of rock, blues, alternative, roots and folk music, can now be heard on 88.7 and 99.7 FM in the Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York areas, as XPN made its first major expansion in years.

PHILADELPHIA - The School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania will receive an in-kind hardware and software contribution totaling approximately $70 million in commercial value from Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education, or PACE, a consortium comprised of General Motors, EDS, Hewlett Packard, Siemens PLM Software, Sun Microsystems and academic partners chosen for their focus on engineering.

Robert W. Carpick has been appointed Penn Director of the Nanotechnology Institute. Carpick is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics and holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Carpick replaces former Penn faculty member David Luzzi, founding investigator of the Institute and now dean of engineering at Northeastern University.

PHILADELPHIA - Three faculty members of the University of Pennsylvania have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).This year AAAS recognized 471 members for their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications. It may seem to be an odd match: The Wharton School and the U.S. Marine Corps. But these two institutions—one a leading center for business education, the other one a premier military unit—have been successful partners in a unique, and somewhat grueling, program called the Quantico Leadership Venture. For the past eight years, the Marines have been helping Wharton MBA students learn about resilience and leadership through the Quantico program. Now, with the creation of a scholarship program named after a fallen Marine, Wharton is returning the favor.
