PHILADELPHIA -- Engineers at the University of Pennsylvania have taken a step toward simplifying the creation of nanostructures by identifying the first inorganic material to phase separate with near-perfect order at the nanometer scale. The finding provides an atomically tuneable nanocomposite "workbench" that is cheap and easy to produce and provides a super-lattice foundation potentially suitable for building nanostructures.The findings appear in the August issue of Nature Materials.

WHAT: A ceremonial ground breaking celebrating the construction of The Radian, a student apartment community in the 3900 block of Walnut Street in Philadelphia, adjacent to the University of Pennsylvania campus and developed by University Partners and Inland American Communities. Scheduled to open in August 2008, the $50 million-plus building will feature a 14-story, 150-unit apartment community as well as more than 40,000 square feet of street- and mezzanine-level retail stores. Its construction will include environmentally friendly energy features.

PHILADELPHIA -- Heather Weiss Frattone has been named associate dean for career planning and placement at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Her appointment is effective July 9."Heather brings to this position an impressive track record in legal practice and policy development as well as great intelligence, energy and creativity," Michael A. Well, more like across the river, to Camden’s Wiggins Park at this year’s XPoNential Music Festival. This four-day WXPN concert series runs July 19 through 22, and features two stages of music for grown-ups and a Kids Corner stage for the young ones.

Construction at Penn continues this summer with the kickoff of a major project to build a new campus home for the Annenberg Public Policy Center. The new building, designed by noted Tokyo architect Fumihiko Maki, will bring much needed consolidation to the Center, which currently has offices spread between the 3rd floor of the Annenberg School, the 5th floor of 3535 Market Street and Washington, D.C.

WHAT: A live multicast of the "Live Earth" concert series, a global event featuring a 24-hour series of eight concerts that will bring together more than 100 music artists and 2 billion people in support of a global movement to solve the climate crisis. WHO: The University of Pennsylvania's Division of Information Services and Computing MAGPI unit will provide the service, along with partners Internet2, Penn Video Network, Montgomery County Community College and Defenders of Wildlife.
