Soon after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in the fall of 2005, faculty at Penn’s School of Social Policy and Practice began asking Richard Gelles what the School could do—should do—to help in the recovery. At the time, Gelles suggested they wait. “There was a lot of pressure within our School to do something [right away],” Gelles remembers. “But I told them, ‘I can assure you, there will be a lot of mental health issues that will arise at least a year out from now.’”

Within a few months of his arrival he had organized a series of major symposia on the Hurricane Katrina catastrophe, bringing together scholars and leaders from around the nation to discuss ways to move forward from the tragedy.

Male Japanese quails seeking the attention of females need to do just one thing: Hang out with other female Japanese quails. The same trick works for sailfin mollies. If females in this fish species see a male drawing the attention of other females, researchers say, they’ll offer their attention too. In essence, these fish seem to be thinking if other females find certain males attractive, there must be a good reason—and so they’ll follow suit.

PHILADELPHIA - Kal Penn, star of the new film "The Namesake" and known for his role as Kumar in the movie "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle," will be a guest instructor at the University of Pennsylvania. He will teach two undergraduate courses in the spring semester of 2008 tentatively titled "Images of Asian Americans in the Media" and "Contemporary American Teen Films."
