For its second annual symposium, the University Faculty Senate has chosen to focus on globalism— and to resurrect an important day in the University’s calendar. Until a decade ago, Jan. 17, otherwise known as Ben Franklin’s birthday, was celebrated on campus as Founders Day. A severe snowstorm canceled the event 10 years ago, and since then the date has gone by unnoticed.

Every neighborhood has a Main Street. Penn’s western edge has 40th Street. Residents west of 43rd St. have Baltimore Avenue. And Powelton Village—a cluster of historic streets, old houses broken up into student apartments and scattered single-family residences located on the northern border of University City—has Lancaster Avenue.

More students from around the world are clamoring to enroll at the University, while Penn students are studying abroad in greater numbers. So says the Institute for International Education, which recently released its annual data on international mobility of students and scholars.

MLK awards It's time to nominate Penn students, staff members or neighborhood residents involved in community service for a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Involvement Recognition Award. The award honors members of the Philadelphia region whose active service to others best exemplifies King's ideals. Nomination forms must be submitted by Friday, Dec. 8 for the award ceremony on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007. Forms may be submitted online at www.upenn.edu/aarc/mlk/award.Great deals

Isabel Sampson-Mapp insists she has the best job at Penn. Outside her tiny, cluttered office on a recent cloudy morning the hallway is beginning to fill up with cans and boxes and cartons. It’s the culmination of Penn’s Thanksgiving holiday food drive, and, as always, the Penn community has stepped up to the plate. Donations will be coming from all across campus,” she beams. “Last year we tripled the number of families we could serve.”

Many of the young artists in the Fine Arts program at Penn dream of being able to sustain themselves through their art. It’s a seductive fantasy, says painter Jane Irish, and one that she was able to live for more than a decade after getting her graduate degree from CUNY’s Queens College. At a certain point, though, she says she had to “bite the bullet and get a day job” to support her studio practice.
