Many of the young artists in the Fine Arts program at Penn dream of being able to sustain themselves through their art. It’s a seductive fantasy, says painter Jane Irish, and one that she was able to live for more than a decade after getting her graduate degree from CUNY’s Queens College. At a certain point, though, she says she had to “bite the bullet and get a day job” to support her studio practice.

Isabel Sampson-Mapp insists she has the best job at Penn. Outside her tiny, cluttered office on a recent cloudy morning the hallway is beginning to fill up with cans and boxes and cartons. It’s the culmination of Penn’s Thanksgiving holiday food drive, and, as always, the Penn community has stepped up to the plate. Donations will be coming from all across campus,” she beams. “Last year we tripled the number of families we could serve.”

PHILADELPHIA - Gregory S. Rost has been named vice president and chief of staff for the Office of the President at the University of Pennsylvania. Rost is currently chief of staff for the president's office at Temple University and served eight years in the administration of former Philadelphia Mayor Edward G. Rendell, including three years as Rendell's chief of staff.

PHILADELPHIA -- University of Pennsylvania engineering professor Nader Engheta has been named by Scientific American magazine as one of the 2006 Scientific American 50, the magazines annual list of leaders in science and technology. The list appears in the December issue, available on newsstands now. Engheta was cited for his research contributions in plasmonics, an emerging field of scientific inquiry regarding the optical and electrical properties of solid matter, such as metals, at nanometer scales.
