A New Technique for Building Nanodevices in the Lab: Electron beam "carves" the world's smallest devices
PHILADELPHIA -- Physicists at the University of Pennsylvania are using a new technique to craft some of the tiniest metal nanostructures ever created, none larger than 10 nanometers, or 10,000 times smaller than the width of a single human hair.

Fluorescence Diffuse Optical Tomography Provides High Contrast, 3-D Look at Breast Cancer
PHILADELPHIA -- Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have created the first three-dimensional optical images of human breast cancer in patients based on tissue fluorescence.Fluorescence diffuse optical tomography, or FDOT, relies on the presence of fluorophore molecules in tissue that re-radiate fluorescent light after illumination by excitation light of a different color. The reconstructed images demonstrated significant tumor contrast compared to typical endogenous optical contrast in breast.

Penn Professors Elected to American Philosophical Society
PHILADELPHIA -- Three professors in the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania have been elected to membership in the American Philosophical Society. Election to the APS recognizes extraordinary accomplishments in all fields.The new APS members from Penn are Daniel H. Janzen, professor of biology; Victor H. Mair, professor of Chinese language and literature; and Peter Stallybrass, professor of English.The American Philosophical Society is the nation's first learned society. It was founded in Philadelphia in 1743.

Penn Physicists Develop a Carbon Nanotube Aeroegel Optimizing Strength, Shape and Conductivity
PHILADELPHIA -- Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have created low-density aerogels made from carbon nanotubes, CNTs, that are capable of supporting 8,000 times their own weight. The new material also combines the strength and ultra-light, heat-insulating properties of aerogels with the electrical conductivity of nanotubes.

Penn Vet Announces World Leadership and Student Inspiration Awards
PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine has launched the first veterinary medicine awards of its kind designed to recognize innovation, creativity and leadership in the veterinary profession anywhere in the world. The Penn Vet World Leadership in Animal Health Award will be presented annually to a veterinarian who has dramatically changed the practice and image of the profession and substantially influenced the lives and careers of others. The award will provide $100,000 in unrestricted funding.

Penn Historian Discovers Evidence Documenting First European Voyage Up the Delaware
PHILADELPHIA - A University of Pennsylvania scholar has pinpointed 1616 as the year of the first European voyage up the Delaware River.Jaap Jacobs, a senior fellow at Penn's McNeil Center for Early American Studies, detailed his findings in a paper, "Truffle Hunting with an Iron Hog: The First Dutch Voyage up the Delaware River," presented to the McNeil Center Seminar Series on April 20.

University of Pennsylvania Adopts Windows Live @ edu to Deliver Communications Platform to Students
PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Pennsylvania has partnered with Microsoft to enhance the communications platform it offers to many of its students. Beginning in the fall semester, students in the School of Arts and Sciences and the Wharton School will have the option of using a customized version of Windows Live called Penn Live to access e-mail and a full suite of online communications services.
