Penn Researchers Find Epstein Barr-like Virus Infects and May Cause Cancer in Dogs
PHILADELPHIA -- More than 90 percent of humans have antibodies to the Epstein Barr virus. Best known for causing mononucleosis, or “the kissing disease,” the virus has also been implicated in more serious conditions, including Hodgkin’s, non-Hodgkin’s and Burkitt’s lymphomas. Yet little is known about exactly how EBV triggers these diseases.

Mayo Clinic, Penn and Partners to Explore New Ways to Predict and Control Seizures
PHILADELPHIA ― Mayo Clinic and partners from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and College of Pharmacy, the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and NeuroVista Corporation have been awarded $7.5 million grant (U01) from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Governor Proposes Commonwealth Funding for Penn Vet for 2012-13
PHILADELPHIA -- Governor Tom Corbett’s FY2012-2013 Commonwealth budget proposes funding of $26.7 million for the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine, the only veterinary school in Pennsylvania and one of only 28 veterinary schools in the United States. The recommended funding is equal to the support received for FY2011-2012.

Gene Therapy Research Team From Penn Vet and Scheie Eye Institute Cures Retinitis Pigmentosa in Dogs
PHILADELPHIA -- Members of a University of Pennsylvania research team have shown that they can prevent, or even reverse, a blinding retinal disease, X-linked Retinitis Pigmentosa, or XLRP, in dogs. The disease in humans and dogs is caused by defects in the RPGR gene and results in early, severe and progressive vision loss. It is one of the most common inherited forms of retinal degeneration in man.

Penn Vet Opens State-of-the-Art Buerger Family Foundation Minimally Invasive Surgery Suite
The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) recently opened its new, state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgical suite at the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital. The Buerger Family Foundation Surgery Suite is the first of its kind in any veterinary teaching hospital and is one of the only operating rooms in veterinary medicine that offers a comprehensive array of minimally invasive surgical procedures for companion animals.

On Tuesday, December 6 the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) will host a free, open-to-the-public lecture called “Caring for Older Pets: Healthcare advice on geriatric and end-of-life issues,” at Penn Medicine in Radnor, PA. Beginning at 6:30 PM, Dr. Meryl Littman, associate professor of medicine at Penn Vet, will talk about the special considerations when caring for older pets and how to handle those difficult decisions end-of-life issues bring.

Penn Vet Hosts Free Lecture, “First Aid Care for Your Pet”
Philadelphia, PA – On Saturday, November 5 the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) will host a free, open-to-the-public lecture called “First Aid Care for Your Pet,” at Penn Vet in Philadelphia, PA. Beginning at 10:00 AM, Dr. Deborah Mandell, staff veterinarian of Ryan Hospital’s Emergency Service, will teach how to determine if a pet is in an emergency situation, and if so, what first-aid can be performed at home.
