Gustavo D. Aguirre Named 2009 Fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthamology

Penn Vet Honors Students With Largest Individual Research Awards In Veterinary Medicine
PHILADELPHIA –- The 2009 Student Inspiration Awards have been announced by the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Award recipients receive $100,000 in research funding, the largest unrestricted student award in veterinary medicine, from the Vernon and Shirley Hill Foundation.

Penn Veterinary Researchers Identify a Critical Growth Factor That Stimulates Sperm Stem Cells to Thrive
PHILADELPHIA –- Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and Pennsylvania State University have identified for the first time a specific “niche factor” in the mouse testes called colony stimulating factor 1, Csf1, that has a direct effect on sperm stem cell self-renewal. Moreover, the study shows that the origin of this growth factor is the Leydig cell — located in the testes and stimulated by the pituitary gland to supply testosterone — that secretes Csf1 and enhances self-renewal of the stem cells.

Just Living With Females Extends the Reproductive Life of the Male Mouse, Says Penn Veterinary Researcher
PHILADELPHIA –- Living with a female mouse can extend the reproductive life of a male mouse by as much as 20 percent, according to a study conducted by Ralph Brinster and a team of other researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. The study was reported online today in the journal Biology of Reproduction.

John Gearhart, Stem Cell Pioneer, Named Penn's Institute for Regenerative Medicine Director and PIK Professor
