James Baker to Speak at Penn Commencement; Honorees Also Include Aretha Franklin, Ruth Bader Ginsburg
PHILADELPHIA - James A. Baker III, a co-chair of the Iraq Study Group who has served as secretary of state and secretary of the treasury, will deliver the address at the University of Pennsylvania's 251st Commencement on Monday, May 14.As secretary of state under the first President Bush, Baker traveled to more than 90 countries for post-Cold War era diplomatic efforts and formed a coalition of 34 countries opposed to Iraq's intervention in Kuwait.

Penn Alexander School Students to Join Role Models in Interactive Videoconference to Celebrate Women's Day
WHAT: In celebration of International Women's Day, the Pennsylvania Commission for Women and MAGPI, the Internet2 provider at the University of Pennsylvania, will co-sponsor an interactive virtual panel discussion and lunch with female role models featured in the commission's book, "Voices,", and school students from grades 6-8 at selected schools across the state. One of the schools is the Penn Alexander School in West Philadelphia, and the others are in the Montgomery County, Harrisburg and Scranton areas.

University of Pennsylvania Names Andrew C. Porter Dean of the Graduate School of Education
PHILADELPHIA -- Andrew C. Porter, the Patricia and Rodes Hart Professor of Leadership Policy and Organization and Director of the Learning Sciences Institute at Vanderbilt University, has been named Dean of the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. He will begin Aug. 1.A nationally known scholar and educator, Porter is an expert in quantitative methods. He also has a deep understanding and appreciation for the important role that historical and qualitative approaches play in understanding the processes of education and human development.

Musical Talent, Not His Physics Degrees, Makes Possible A Carnegie Hall Debut for Penn Graduate Student
PHILADELPHIA - An inquisitive nature about the workings of the world around him brought New York City native Jonathan Fisher to the University of Pennsylvania nine years ago to study physics. An exceptional musical talent will soon take him home again. A pianist since the age of 8, Fisher will make his Carnegie Hall debut at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, March 10, in the facility's Weill Recital Hall, 154 W. 57th St., New York, about two months before he expects to receive his doctorate in physics and astronomy from Penn.

Roy and Gretchen Jackson Endow Chair for Equine Disease Research at Penn Veterinary Medicine School
PHILADELPHIA - A $3 million gift from Roy and Gretchen Jackson, owners of Barbaro, will endow a chair in the name of Dean W. Richardson at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

MAGPI Hub at University of Pennsylvania Connects to New Internet2 Network
PHILADELPHIA -- The MAGPI advanced networking hub at the University of Pennsylvania has connected to the new Internet2 Network, providing the research and education community in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware with more than 10 times the capacity of its current network and with new on-demand bandwidth capabilities. MAGPI is the acronym for Mid-Atlantic Gigapop in Philadelphia for Internet2.

Moody's Upgrades University of Pennsylvania's Debt Rating, Citing Growth in Financial Reserves
PHILADELPHIA -- Moody's Investor Services has upgraded the University of Pennsylvania's long-term debt rating to Aa2, from Aa3. Moody's removed Penn's rating from a watchlist for potential upgrades and said the rating outlook is stable.This rating upgrade to Aa2 restores the University to its highest rating level, last achieved in 1998.

Pamela S. Caudill Named Executive Director of Research Services at University of Pennsylvania
PHILADELPHIA - Pamela S. Caudill has been named executive director of the Office of Research Services at the University of Pennsylvania. Reporting to the vice president for finance and treasurer and to the vice provost for research, Caudill manages the sponsored research cycle, from the submission of proposals through the completion of final reports. This includes accounting, research administration and dissemination of financial policies related to sponsored research.

Adrian Raine Is Named Fourth PIK Professor at Penn
PHILADELPHIA - Adrian Raine has been named the newest Penn Integrates Knowledge professor at the University of Pennsylvania.He is a professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Southern California and at Penn will hold the Richard Perry University Professorship, named in recognition of a gift from Richard Perry, a Penn trustee and founder of the investment management firm Perry Capital.
