The study shows that two distinctly different ways of seeing motion are used - one to catch up to a moving object with our eyes, a second to lock on and examine it.

Council Calls for New Partnership Between Nursing and Medicine to Address Personnel Shortages
PHILADELPHIA - The Council on Physician and Nurse Supply is calling for a new partnership between nursing and medicine to address the growing shortage of physicians and nurses.The Council, based at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, noted physician shortages exist within most specialties and that nursing shortages are widespread. At current training levels, there will be too few physicians and nurses to meet future demand.

Penn's Field Center Hosts Documentary Film Festival on Child Abuse, Part of National Child-Welfare Conference
PHILADELPHIA - The winners have been announced in the University of Pennsylvania's Field Center for Children's Policy, Practice & Research's documentary film contest, a part of National Child Abuse Prevention month. A panel of expert judges, including producers from CNN, the Greater Philadelphia Film Office and award-winning documentary filmmakers, judged the high school and college submissions.

Penn Nursing's LIFE Program for Seniors Opens Facility That's Gone from Community Eyesore to Asset
WHAT: The grand opening of a new facility for the Living Independently for Elders, or LIFE program, a community outreach of the School of Nursing of the University of Pennsylvania. LIFE provides nursing home-level day care, including medical, dental and personal grooming services and social activities, for more than 300 frail elderly from West Philadelphia who are nursing home-eligible but prefer to live in their own homes. The LIFE staff also make house calls, providing in-home oversight to members.

Penn Vet Announces World Leadership and Student Inspiration Awards
PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine has launched the first veterinary medicine awards of its kind designed to recognize innovation, creativity and leadership in the veterinary profession anywhere in the world. The Penn Vet World Leadership in Animal Health Award will be presented annually to a veterinarian who has dramatically changed the practice and image of the profession and substantially influenced the lives and careers of others. The award will provide $100,000 in unrestricted funding.

U.S. Falls to 27th in Latest Report Card on World Social Progress; Chronic Poverty to Blame
PHILADELPHIA -- Cuts in social services and chronic poverty in U.S. cities and rural areas during the '90s have caused the U.S. to lag behind nearly all of Europe and several other countries in terms of overall social progress, according to the 2004 "Report Card on World Social Progress" by Richard Estes, a University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work professor.
