Penn Libraries to Launch Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies With $20 Million Gift
PHILADELPHIA – The Penn Libraries have received a major collection of 280 medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, valued at more than $20 million, from long-time benefactors and Library Board members Lawrence J. Schoenberg and Barbara Brizdle Schoenberg. To promote the use of this and other manuscript collections at Penn, the Libraries will create the Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies.

GRASP robot throws out first pitch at Phillies game
On Wednesday, April 20, a special member of the Penn community took to the field at Citizens Bank Park as the Phillies met the Milwaukee Brewers. A robot from the University’s General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception (GRASP) Lab threw out the first pitch as part of the Phillies’ “Science Day at the Ballpark.” The event was part of the citywide Philadelphia Science Festival, which runs April 15 through 28.

President Gutmann receives child advocacy award
The Support Center for Child Advocates presented Penn President Amy Gutmann with the 2011 Judge Lois G. Forer Child Advocacy Award yesterday evening at a ceremony where, among others, Richard Gelles, dean of the School of Social Policy and Practice, and Ira Harkavy, founding director of the Barbara and Edward Netter Center for Community Partnerships, were also honored as 2011 Distinguished Advocates.

Penn helps city police update how they report domestic violence incidents
The Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) receives nearly 150,000 calls regarding incidents of domestic disturbance each year. For the past 30 years, the forms that police used to report these incidents were the same as those used for all other crimes—leaving out pertinent details that are unique to domestic violence cases. “For the most part, it was up to the discretion of the officer to fill in any relevant information,” says Patricia Giorgio Fox, deputy commissioner of the PPD.

Penn’s Gregory S. Rost Appointed to the Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority
PHILADELPHIA – Gregory S. Rost, vice president and chief of staff to University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann, has been appointed to the five-member board of the Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority, PICA, according to an announcement today by Pennsylvania House Democratic Leader Frank Dermody.

Loss of Cell Adhesion Protein Drives Esophageal and Oral Cancers in Mice, Penn Researchers Report
Squamous cell cancers of the oral cavity and esophagus are common throughout the world, with over 650,000 cases of oral cancer each year and esophageal cancer representing the sixth most common cause of cancer death in men. Research by University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine investigators has shown that a protein that helps cells stick together is frequently absent or out of place in these cancers, but it’s unclear if its loss causes the tumors.
