John Weisel envisioned his first ever trip to the wilderness of Isle Royale National Park—an island in the middle of Lake Superior—as a sort of sabbatical. The trip was to be the last of a series of similar trips—Utah and New Zealand were among the earlier stops—during which Weisel sought to do things, and conduct research, that he’d never tried before.
