Over the years, scholars have put forth all sorts of theories to explain the persistent achievement gap between blacks and whites in college. A new study by a team of Penn sociologists has now put those theories to the statistical test.

Whoever said that you can’t get too much advice must have been a student at Penn. On the College web site alone under “Advising,” there is an extensive list that includes freshmen advisors, pre-major advisors, major advisors, pilot curriculum advisors, and peer advisors as well as the nine College advisors. They all assist students in the navigating the minefield that is the College’s course requirements and ensure that students’ academic concerns and problems are addressed.

Charitable giving fuels much that is good in our society, including the institution we work for. So as we contemplate how to complete our Penn’s Way pledges, we thought we’d give a few people a chance to play fantasy philanthropist. We went to two offices where people are intimately familiar with money—Student Financial Services (SFS) and the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Treasurer—and asked, “If you had a million dollars to give to the charity of your choice, who would you give it to and why?”

The College of General Studies’ annual Writers Conference at Penn brings some of the country’s most talented writers to campus for a day-long event Nov. 8. The conference explores the challenges that face anyone engaged or interested in writing for a living and gives writers opportunities to hone their skills and make professional connections. This year’s keynote speaker is Jennifer Egan, author of “Look at Me” and “The Invisible Circus.” The fee for the ninth annual Writers Conference is $165.

Peter Cappelli is no stranger to major business management reform projects. He had a hand in the proposal to improve the Philadelphia Convention Center and helped to shift Pennsylvania’s court system from local to state control. For years, he helped run the Department of Education’s National Center on the Quality of the Workforce, based at Penn. Earlier this year, he was hand-picked to serve as Senior Advisor in employment policy to the Kingdom of Bahrain, a small Middle Eastern country in the Persian Gulf, east of Saudi Arabia.

Got a design problem you want solved? Put it to Penn Praxis. Penn Praxis is the student-faculty clinical consulting practice in the School of Design. Much like the legal clinics most law schools operate do for future lawyers, Penn Praxis gives students across the Design School the opportunity to gain real-world problem-solving experience while helping community and civic groups that cannot afford professional services.
