Mitchell Duneier, a professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is author of "Sidewalk," an ethnography of book vendors in New York's Greenwich Village. In his book, Duneier examines whether street vendors contribute to street safety or threaten it, revisiting the same sidewalks that Jane Jacobs wrote about 40 years ago in her landmark book "The Death and Life of Great American Cities."
Duneier is currently a visiting professor at both City University of New York's Graduate Center and Princeton University. He also has appointments in sociology at the University of Minnesota and the University of California, Santa Barbara.
The lecture is free and open to the public. Additional information is available by calling the Urban Studies Program at 215-898-6948.

In honor of Valentine's Day, and as a way of fostering community in her Shakespeare in Love course, Becky Friedman took her students to the University Club for lunch one class period. They talked about the movie "Shakespeare in Love," as part of a broader conversation on how Shakespeare's works are adapted.
